THE Richard Drax MP column, in today’s Echo (Friday, Sept 14), should be compulsory reading for anyone, under 40, viewing the EU through rose tinted spectacles and blaming today’s pensioners, who, in their millions voted leave.

The only point in his column I disagree with, is where he suggests that, looking back records might show that it was a political project doomed from the outset.

As one of today’s pensioners who voted leave, I cannot recall that in 1973, the then EEC, was ever sold to us as a political union.

It was a trading bloc. And possibly, in the minds of those in power at the time, some of whom had lived through two world wars, the opportunity to stop the Germans pulling on their boots for a third time.

The EU has grown into a political organisation over the years, with successive UK administrations dribbling away our independence.

Today the Germans ARE in charge. Nothing is ever agreed unless they all agree. “He who pays the piper calls the tune?”

The EU in its current format of 28 disparate nations is falling apart.

The only reason the EU negotiators are giving us a hard time over leaving is to frighten the rest into staying in.

Ignore the current crop of doom mongers. This country has faced far worse. When the dust has settled you “youngsters” will thank us “oldies.”
