PUDDLETOWN 12

WIMBORNE II 47

IT WAS a tough afternoon for the Villagers at Greenfields for the second week in a row as Puddletown were well-beaten 47-12 by Wimborne Seconds in Dorset & Wilts One South.

Puddletown were missing a few of their regular starters and were always going to find it hard going as a result.

However, a strong Wimborne side did not make it any easier as they produced a well-drilled performance to storm past Puddletown.

From the kick-off the visitors looked sharp and within two minutes they had scored.

Wimborne won the ball in midfield and quickly fed it out to their pacey outside centre who went over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Puddletown hit back a few minutes later when fly-half James Elwood kicked through, left winger Jacob Holt chased down the kick and put the Wimborne full-back under pressure.

The full-back tried to hack the ball away, only to mis-kick and knock it up straight into Holt’s hands.

Holt subsequently was able to run under the posts unopposed to score before James Elwood converted.

The rest of the first half saw the Wimborne side make the most of their experience and pace out wide, scoring three converted tries to make it 26-7 at the break.

It was a similar story after the break with the visitors scoring three converted tries to lead 47-7.

Despite the score, the home side fought valiantly in defence and continued to offer some strong resistance and their own attacking phases.

With about five minutes remaining, Elwood pounced on a ball that had been slapped back from a Wimborne line-out on the Puddletown 10-metre line.

Elwood then hacked it forward and raced through to pick up the bouncing ball and race 40 metres to go over to score the final try of the game.

As a result, Puddletown were condemned to a heavy 47-12 defeat against Wimborne.

Despite the scoreline, the game was thoroughly entertaining to watch, with Puddletown competing through to the final whistle.

Puddletown are 10th in the table after taking just one point from their opening two fixtures in the league.

Once again, Puddletown have some areas to work on in training in the coming weeks, but the overall feeling is one of optimism.

Next week sees another home game in the form of a cup game against last week’s opposition Oakmeadians.
