A Weymouth bus driver is wheely grateful after being recognised for his efforts in a national competition.

Although First Wessex employee Nick Graham did not win the Bus Driver of the Year competition, he came a respectable fourth.

He competed against 90 other bus drivers from across the UK in the 52nd annual competition which was held in Blackpool.

Mr Graham, who joined First Wessex six years ago, said: "I’m delighted to have done so well at the Bus Driver of the Year competition and so proud to be one of the best.

"The last time I had forgotten my reading glasses and scored poorly on the theory," Mr Graham reveals. "I dedicate this win to my wife, who made extra sure I didn’t forget my glasses this time round."

Mr Graham won £750, plus £1,000 for placing the highest against the other First Group competitors.

The drivers were judged on multiple tasks, including theory and obstacle tests, concentrating on safety, customer service, general driving standards and ability.

"This competition gets tougher each year, and the standard of drivers is very high, but the support that I receive really helps me to rise to the challenge,” Mr Graham said.

Fame hasn't gone to Mr Graham's head, as he's back driving his regular routes on the Weymouth roads this week.

He added: "The response from my colleagues has been so positive and motivates me to do even better next year."

"Everyone at First Wessex is incredibly proud of Nick," said managing director, Marc Reddy.

“Nick is an incredibly determined driver and is very passionate about what he does; his driving style is always exceptionally smooth. It’s not just his ability to handle a bus which is outstanding, he is also good with customers."

The top position for the UK went to Stagecoach driver, Ian Field, based in eastern Scotland.
