A dialysis patient has forgone birthday gifts to give back to the hospital that saved her life.

Angie Smy, who receives regular dialysis treatment, has donated £170 to the haemodialysis unit at Dorset County Hospital (DCH).

Mrs Smy recently celebrated her 65th birthday and celebrated with a joint birthday party with husband Laurie - who was marking his 70th.

Rather than receive presents from family and friends, the couple asked for donations to the haemodialysis unit, a charity close to both their hearts.

Angie spends four and a half hours a day, three times a week, as a guest of the unit receiving dialysis.

She said: “Without these wonderful people, I would not be here. They are quite literally lifesavers. The staff here are so kind and caring, and I am truly grateful for all the welcome attention they give to myself and all the patients who receive treatment here. "This has become a second home to me, and like the family we have all become, we keep one another going. There is always time for a laugh and a joke. This is why I chose to make this donation.”

Receiving the cheque on behalf of the unit was local councillor and family friend, Tim Harries and Simon Pearson, head of the DCH fundraising charity.

Mr Pearson said: “We are so thankful for this tremendous token of support from Angie. This is incredibly valuable for both the unit and all the patients who pass through on a daily basis.”
