Film fans happy to forego tippy-uppy seats and expensive snacks in favour of independent cinema are in luck - Weymouth has got a brand new indie film night, and it's raising money for an important cause.

The first night of the Last Monday Film Club proved popular, with over 20 attendees staying behind for a lively post-film debate after watching Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2001 cult classic, Amelie. The atmosphere was relaxed, with snacks, a cheap bar and a warm welcome from organisers.

As the club's name suggests, the evenings will be held on the last Monday of every month, and money raised will help fund activities, social events and creative workshops for people struggling with mental health and other issues.

East Boro, the organisation now running the former Waverley pub, is transforming the space into a multi-use community centre for adults and young people with learning disabilities, mental health needs, the elderly, carers, parents with young families, socially isolated and lonely people and marginalised groups.

Andy Smith, creative coordinator for East Boro said: "I'm pleasantly surprised about how well attended our first night has been, and how many people sat round and enjoyed a lively debate afterwards.

"I wanted to set up a forum for likeminded people who enjoy film - the reason I chose Amelie for the opening night is because it's based in fantasy, it's about escapism - if 20 people can sit in a room and lose themselves in a movie for a few hours, that's a positive thing.”

"The movie club not only encourages critical debate about movies but offers an opportunity to improve your own wellbeing.

“We're attempting to change the perception of arts as a viable option in improving wellbeing and offering some therapeutic value for low level mental health issues.

"Watching movies raises internal questions about how you relate to the characters. Engaging in creative activities has a proven track record for improving mental health and can have similar therapeutic benefits to physical exercise."

Organisers are in discussions with local art groups looking to use the space for workshops and events.
