The family of a man who died suddenly after collapsing at work have donated life-saving equipment in his memory.

Kevin Stevens, 56, from Portland, died on September 24 last year after suffering a cardiac arrest while climbing the stairs at the Wessex Royale Hotel in Dorchester where he worked as a night porter.

His wife Caron has since donated a defibrillator to the hotel, as well as another to Hayloft Cafe on Portland after months of fundraising during a "difficult year."

Caron said: "It was just a normal day, it came with no warning, no symptoms.

"The sad part is there was only one other person working with him so he couldn't leave the building, he had to stay with Kevin.

"We donated a defibrillator to the Wessex Royale Hotel earlier this year, and we were looking for somewhere on Portland where there is gap. There is a defibrillator in Easton and one in Southwell, but I live in Wakeham and there wasn't anything down here."

The potentially life-saving equipment will be available for public use 24 hours a day, and can be accessed by key code through calling the ambulance service.

Caron said she started her fundraising mission as a "distraction" after her family's tragic loss. Through a mixture of online crowdfunding and fundraising events with the support of friends and loved ones, hundreds of pounds was raised to buy the two vital pieces of equipment which could prevent a similar situation happening in the future.

Sally Robinson, manager of the Cove Holiday Park which encompasses the Hayloft Cafe, said: "We were looking to install a defibrillator as we are growing as a company.

"As part of the Pennsylvania Castle Estate, we can have a lot of people here at a time and as we get bigger, the more chance there is that something could happen. It makes sense to have it here."
