A FILM fan celebrated her 100th birthday with tea, cakes, and Elvis songs.

Staff at Care South's Buxton House care home in Weymouth threw resident Elizabeth Whiff a party to remember, to mark the milestone birthday.

The event was even attended by an Elvis impersonator, singing her favourite songs.

Known as 'Lizzie' to staff, Mrs Whiff has lived at the home for eight years, after moving there in 2010.

She was born in East London on October 7, 1918.

Whilst growing up, Mrs Whiff enjoyed going to the cinema as she is big fan of films, especially musicals. When she wasn’t at the cinema she would help her brother look after their family flock of pigeons, which she particularly enjoyed.

Mrs Whiff worked as a tailor after leaving school and specialised in sewing and mending men’s jackets. In 1939, she married her husband and soon after gave birth to her three daughters, Jean, Pat and Barbara, who all visit her at the home regularly.

She enjoys spending her time watching her favourite football team, West Ham. She also has many hobbies, including knitting, baking and painting whilst singing along to her favourite Elvis songs.

Mrs Whiff celebrated her 100th birthday in style at the home as staff arranged a birthday tea party, complete with food, fun and an Elvis Presley act to sing her favourite songs. She enjoyed a cup of tea and a piece of cake while the residents and staff sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to her.

The changes that she has seen over the last 100 years, include two World Wars, the Great Depression of the 1930s, the moon landings and space race, as well as a number of key inventions, such as the PC, airplane, antibiotics, TV and the advent of the internet.

Clare Baker, home manager at Care South’s Buxton House, said: “Lizzie is always chatting away with residents and staff at Buxton House, her laughter and great sense of humour always brightens up a room. We had a great time celebrating Lizzie’s special day and we were extremely pleased to welcome her family to the home. It was a great celebration and everyone seemed to enjoy the tea party.”

Mayor of Weymouth and Portland, Councillor Gill Taylor, attended the birthday party and said: “It’s wonderful to be able to be here on her 100th Birthday. It’s a real privilege to have people like her in the borough and I wish her all the best for the future.”
