Youngsters at a Dorchester School will be able to take part in extra-curricular activities regardless of their family circumstance - thanks to a donation from local residents.

The Poundbury Residents Association (PRA) has handed over £5,000 to Damers First School in Poundbury.

The money will be dedicated to providing equal access to extra-curricular educational opportunities for all pupils at the school, regardless of their family circumstances.

William Gibbons, chairman of the PRA, said: “We are pleased to be offering a donation that supports the education of local young people. We feel this is the best use of money which has been raised in Poundbury by Poundbury residents. We are delighted to be able to provide practical support to assist the school in its determination to offer equal educational opportunities to all its pupils.”

The fund will be administered by the school in line with principles agreed with the PRA.

Headteacher Catherine Smith said: “Children who come to Damers experience a bold and courageous curriculum which allows the opportunity to go beyond the requirements of the national curriculum in areas such as the arts, sport, technology and the natural world.

"We offer a curriculum which is enriched through our work with external professionals, out of school visits and experiences that bring learning to life. We strive to ensure that all children within our care thrive as a result of these experiences and that any barriers to access are removed through additional fundraising.

"We are incredibly grateful to the Poundbury Residents Association for this generous donation which will help us to continue to provide learning at its absolute best for all children in our care.”

The cheque was handed over at a presentation ceremony at the school on Thursday (4).

The PRA aims to bring together all residents and businesses in Poundbury to make the area a great place to live and celebrate community spirit.

As the area expands, they want to change the perception of the Dorchester town expansion. A committee meets regularly to provide a forum for information and consultation, as well as plan events.
