Coastguards were called to a 'person in the water' at Chesil Beach.

Portland Bill Coastguard Rescue, along with the Weymouth lifeboat, were called to reports of a possible person in the water near to the checkpoint on the beach at 3.25pm yesterday.

On arrival crews met with the person who had made the call, and after closer inspection through binoculars it was found to be a large patch of seaweed.

A spokesman for Portland Bill Coastguard said: "The first informant was thanked for their concern. Both coastguards and lifeboat were then stood down and returned to stations.

"Remember if you see anything untoward in the sea, dial 999 ask for coastguard."
