HOW sad it is to read a letter from someone outside the county who no longer visits Dorset because of the on-going badger cull (Cull is no answer, September 27).

However, for those of us who strongly oppose this cull, and there are very many in Dorset as elsewhere in the UK, such a letter reinforces the arguments that we constantly put forward, but which are ignored by the government that is desperate not to upset the NFU.

We do not need to repeat Jane Hutchins’ very clear summary of the facts. But living in rural Dorset for over 20 years we have seen the wildlife of our beautiful countryside diminish. One can no longer take for granted the chance to see badgers on an evening stroll, where they once lived peacefully, and the common sight of hares in fields is now quite rare.

The greatest tragedy is already happening. In some areas of Dorset, badgers are virtually extinct.

Our countryside is being devastated by a government that continues to pursue a policy that deliberately kills thousands of sentient animals, whilst a far more scientific approach to tackling the dreadful disease of TB in cattle, such as vaccination and greater biosecurity is urgently needed.
