Wet weather failed to dampen the spirits of hundreds of determined runners at a brand new sporting event.

The first ever Dorchester Dash 10k took place on Sunday and more than 200 athletes turned out to try their hand at the event which is part of the 1610 sports centre race series.

The one lap route began at Dorchester Sports Centre, taking competitors through quiet roads in the town centre before heading up to and around Maiden Castle, packing in a mix of challenging hills and scenic views before heading back to the sports centre.

A spokesman for the event said: "The heavy rain meant that the course was extra challenging but all competitors did a great job in navigating their way around the scenic hillfort of Maiden Castle.

"Chris Monteith was our overall winner and completed the course in a time of 41m minutes and seven seconds. The first female to cross the line was Roisin Morgan in a time of 48 minutes and 44 seconds

"Our younger competitors enjoyed the Junior 1k fun run and receiving their own medal."

The 10k run this year replaced the popular Dorchester Dash triathlon which had taken place annually in the town since 2013.
