There were dramatic scene on the coastline last night as two people had to be winched to safety after becoming trapped on a cliff.

A team from Wyke Coastguard were paged just after 8.30pm to reports of two people stuck on a cliff.

The pair believed they were near Redcliffe, near Bowleaze Cove.

The casualties had tried to make their way parked at the top of a cliff but had become stuck and raised the alarm.

With little battery life left on their phone, they agreed to ring off, but stay in their location and signal using the phone torch as soon as they spotted search teams.

On arrival the coastguard team paired off and started to search from the base and top of the cliff towards Bowleaze Cove from the Spyglass Pub.

When this search yielded no sight of the casualties both Portland Bill Coastguard and the coastguard helicopter, Rescue 175 were called to assist.

During the search, a distant light was spotted toward the Ringstead area, which when signalled at by the coastguard, signalled directly back.

The teams quickly redirected their search towards Redcliff Point at Ringstead.

Shortly after arrival, the helicopter team reported they had found both casualties, who were seemingly unharmed, and stuck mid way up the cliff between Ringstead Beach and the upper Ringstead carpark.

Once the helicopter had located a suitable landing spot both casualties were winched to safety.

The Rescue 175 then landed directly in the lower carpark at Ringstead, where they were met by Wyke and Portland team members.

The casualties were then taken by car back to their vehicle at the top carpark, Ringstead.

With the casualties safe and well, all coastguard teams were allowed to stand down.
