Three talented youngsters wowed the crowds in London when they took part in an iconic, commemorative event.

Members of the Portland sea cadets, Able Cadets Lillie and Rosie and Leading Cadet William took part in the annual Trafalgar Day Parade.

The parade marks the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 when Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson defeated the French and Spanish fleets off Cape Trafalgar in South West Spain, losing his life at the height of his most famous victory.

Every year around 400 sea cadets from across the UK take part in the march through central London, watched by dignitaries and thousands of supporters, tourists and members of the public.

The Portland trio were part of an 80-strong marching band which took part in displays in Trafalgar Square before leading the parade down The Mall, past Buckingham Palace to Wellington Barracks.

Portland Sea Cadets Commanding Officer, Lt Rachel Harris, said: “The Cadets were delighted to be selected to take part in this event, they had worked so hard to be there.

“It’s a reflection of the dedication and passion these young people have invested throughout the year that they can deliver such a show-stopping parade. We have had a fantastic year in all our activities giving the cadets many opportunities and certainly lots of fun. We are really proud of them.”

The Portland unit was recently singled out from eight sea cadet units in Somerset and Dorset with two awards for providing an outstanding contribution to the community and for the most participation in local events.

Portland Sea Cadets is part of the national Sea Cadet youth charity, which offers water-based and land-based adventure to young people aged 10 to 18.

They offer activities including sailing, rowing, rock-climbing, marine engineering, first aid aimed at boosting young people’s confidence as they earn nationally recognised qualifications.
