WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND 21

OAKMEADIANS 10

WEYMOUTH & Portland took a brilliant third win of the season, overcoming a strong Oakmeadians side 21-10 in their Wadworth 6X Dorset & Wilts One South clash at Monmouth Avenue.

The Seahorses are now fifth in the table and set about their triumph by scoring the first try after 11 minutes of play.

Chris Norton was the scorer, finishing off a smart blindside move, collecting Lewis Allan’s pass and running 30 metres for a converted try when Alex Toms added the extras.

Weymouth & Portland had their second when Khylo Farley retrieved an aimless Oakmeadians’ kick and span the ball out to flying winger Norton Rogers, who beat two men before scoring under the posts.

Toms again converted and Weymouth the hosts had a 14-0 lead until the Oakmeadians’ full-back chased down his own chip and finished well for an unconverted try.

After a line-out eight metres from the try line, Oaks scored again following a powerful driving maul but once more failed to convert as the sides went in 14-10 at half-time.

Home scrum-half Allan completed the Seahorses’ try-scoring when he zipped through a gap in a ruck and ran in from 30 metres for a converted score.

Weymouth felt aggrieved in the closing moments when they were denied what seemed to be a try, only to miss out on a bonus point as the referee was unsighted by the mass of bodies on the line.

Speaking to Echosport following the victory, Seahorses’ co-coach Simon Litster felt his charges had “performed well” to a man.

He said: “Oakmeadians are a well-drilled side so it wasn’t an easy task. We started off very well, which seems to be our modus operandi. Last year it took us a while to get into games.

“It was very close. The atmosphere at half-time was one of mild surprise – we let them into the game. But to beat Oakmeadians was a good feather in our caps.

“Before kick-off one of our players pulled out in Rory Legg. We had to shuffle the back line and Lewis Richards stepped up to play 12. Everybody performed well.

“Matt Driver was man-of-the-match and had an excellent game at number six. He tackled and rucked well, counter-rucked. Unfortunately he’s not available every week because of work.

“We brought on Joe Gibson in the second half and he had a great game, carried well and stole the ball. He certainly made an impact.

“It was Scott White’s first game, he’s quick and tackled well.”
