A man is seeking support to organise a swashbuckling pirate festival in Weymouth.

Taloch Jameson, who is the lead singer of the The Dolmen, wants to organise a large pirate festival in the town and is seeking backing from Weymouth BID.

Since 2012, Mr Jameson and his band have organised The Dolmen Pirate Parlay in Weymouth. The event sees enthusiasts dress up as pirates and take part in themed events, including a pirate parade.

However, Mr Jameson wants to expand on the Pirate Parlay to include the whole town.

He said: “The town has a rich nautical history and we have the quay, but when people come down here they don’t know very much about it.

“One of the most famous pirates Henry Strangeways originally came from Dorset. He was known as a Gentleman Pirate.

“Next year we can make a great pirate festival by working together and doing something that will help the town’s businesses and bring a lot of activity into Weymouth. It can be massively enjoyable for both young and old people.”

Mr Jameson discussed how re-enactors could stage a pirate battle on Weymouth Beach, and there could be a treasure hunt with a Captain Jack Sparrow impersonator. He also said he’d like to see some unusual musicians and entertainers performing on the streets.

He added: “We also want a great big galleon to come into the harbour. It would be fantastic to have that moored there over the weekend.”

The proposed dates for the Pirate Festival is the weekend starting Friday, July 5.

He explained how his band recently performed on a galleon at the Brixham Pirate Festival and said it meant everyone at the quayside could hear the performance.

“It was a spectacle. Nobody will know this history unless we have a big pirate festival, something we can look forward to every year and can be part of what Weymouth has to offer. If we get backing for it then it won’t just be the Dolmen Pirate Parlay, we will be proud to call it Weymouth Pirate Festival. Let’s get our name up there with all the other towns doing it.”

He also said he’d like to see the town beat the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as pirates.

Mr Jameson said he is in discussions with Weymouth BID. However, the BID have confirmed they are yet to receive a funding application from Mr Jameson, so the pirate festival will be discussed at a later board meeting.
