A young Farmers Club has invited new members to join their group for the new term.

The call for new members has come from Beaminster Young Farmers Club (YFC), one of nine clubs in Dorset.

Beaminster YFC currently has 25 active members who meet every Tuesday evening in the function room above The Red Lion Pub in Beaminster.

The age of members at the club ranges from 10 to the maximum age of 26.

As a club there is always a chance to compete, which not only provides a sense of rivalry between clubs in the county, but great for making new friends.

Every year each club within the county hosts a harvest supper, and this year Beaminster YFC based its theme around Christmas, meaning members sang Christmas songs and pulled crackers midway through September.

Flora Colebred, Beaminster YFC publicity secretary, said: "I've found that since joining young farmers so many doors have been opened to opportunities that I didn't even know existed beforehand.

"Young farmers have been the bridge for me in terms of trying and having a go at new things such as public speaking, sporting events and stock judging.

"If I hadn't of joined the club I wouldn't have gotten involved in any of these activities, which have not only boosted my self confidence massively, but I've made countless new friends who I wouldn't have otherwise crossed paths with.

"I'm lucky enough to currently hold the title of Dorset's Junior Member of the Year which is all down to simply having a go at a young farmers competition.

"I've found that within young farmers every opportunity is so easily accessible which is brilliant because it's always so inviting to just 'have a go' at everything."

The club is looking for new members aged between 10 and 26 who love rural life and want to get involved with something new.

Members stand by the motto 'you don't have to be a farmer to be a young farmer', and you don't even need to own a pair of wellies.

A evening of bowling is being held for new members at Freshwater Holiday Park Jurassic Fun Centre on Tuesday, October 30 from 7.30pm, with new members going free.

Another young farmers’ club has also organised an evening of entertainment for new members.

Marshwood Vale Young Farmers Club (YFC) meets on the first Tuesday of each month at Broadoak Village Hall, and currently has just under 50 members.

The club has kicked off the new term by hosting its annual general meeting, which not only saw a reflection on the previous year, but also changes to roles at the club.

Rachel Allen, club secretary of Marshwood Vale Young Farmers’ Club, said: “We had a successful year last year and we raised £10,000 for Dorset County Hospital Charity Cancer Unit Appeal.

“We are a youth organisation for and run by young people aged 10 to 26.

“We do a range of activities throughout the year including visits, learning skills, competitions and social nights.

“You don’t need to be involved in farming to be a young farmer, just someone who appreciates the countryside and enjoys rural life.”

The previous term saw club members run different games and activities at the Melplash Show, competing in the West Bay Raft Race amongst many other fun activities.

The new members’ night will take place at Whitchurch Canonicorum Village Hall from 7.30pm until 9.30pm on Wednesday, October 31.
