The adrenaline will already be pumping for motocross riders ahead of this weekend's big event.

A record number of daredevils will be entering this year's two-wheeled scramble over the sands of Weymouth Beach, including several of the sport's biggest names.

The 362-strong lineup is headed by four times world enduro champion, Steve Holcombe and former European and British enduro champion Daryl Bolter. They will be joined by no fewer than eight British champions, including women’s champion Catherine King.

Jake Shipton, a local legend of the sport who has won the event three times, will also be taking to the sands to show the pros how it's done in Weymouth.

The thrilling race allows the public to get closer to the action than at any other motocross event - over a hundred riders will be revving their engines at each starting line this year.

World champion Steve Holcombe is feeling enthusiastic ahead of the race. He said: “It’s been an incredible year for me, winning the FIM EnduroGP World Championship. Being able to now enjoy a few races way from the pressure of international competition, close to my home in the UK is something I'm really looking forward to.

"During the year I've spent a lot of time riding on sand, but this will be my first beach race this season.

"The bigger, high-pressure races are behind me until 2019, so I can't wait to get back to the kind of racing I grew up doing and enjoy myself this weekend.”

The weather forecast is looking good for Sunday, and organisers Weymouth & Portland Lions Club and Purbeck Motocross Club say it's all adding up to be one of the best events so far.

Cllr Richard Kosior said: “The beach motocross is one of the great out-of-season events in Weymouth. It attracts many thousands of visitors to the town to enjoy this unique annual spectacle.

"The race is a wonderful example of team work and collaboration between the borough council, the Lions Club and the Purbeck Motocross Club.

"My congratulations to all involved.”
