BUDDING documentary makers learned the tricks of the trade when a production company visited Portland to help the schoolchildren make a range of documentary films.

A group of 10 Year 9 students at Royal Manor school, Portland, spent the day with the Calling The Shots production team from Bristol to make video podcasts about Portland's history.

English teacher at Royal Manor School Laura Parkes said: "The students have put in a lot of hours outside of school and they are extremely excited about seeing their ideas on the big screen - Hollywood here they come!"

The project was co-ordinated by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and received £12,000 funding from the English Heritage Lottery Fund.

The students did all the research for the films, which focused on smuggling in Portland and Portland Castle and they interviewed the residents at Portland to find out what it was like to live on the island years ago.

Councillor David Harris said: "This is an exciting project that will give the students a chance to gain new skills and learn about local history at the same time." The footage will be available for online downloads and premiered at a film launch party.
