A community project to mark the First World War Centenary culminates today with a magnificent display at a town centre church.

Volunteers have been making thousands of paper doves, a symbol of peace, for the ‘100 Years On’ project.

Schools, community groups, churches and veterans have been getting involved in making them.

They will be on display, hanging from the ceiling, in an event at St Mary’s Church in St Mary Street between 10.30am and 2.30pm today.

Poetry, letters and artwork can also be seen and some veterans will be attending for people to talk to.

‘Silent Soldiers’, life size silhouettes of WW1 soldiers, will also be on display.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Gill Taylor said: “The events associated with this will commemorate the fallen, help educate all generations, and help heal, bring peace and hope to our community.

“At the event at St Mary’s Church, there will be craft workshops where you can make a poppy and a dove, view the young people’s work, listen to veterans stories and try some soup.”

Craft workshops have taken place in recent weeks at Weymouth Library, St Aldhelm's Church and the Veterans Hub.
