A motorcyclist suffered a broken leg in a crash on the A35 Dorchester bypass last night.

The road was closed between the Football Ground roundabout (A354 turn-off to Weymouth) and the Stinsford roundabout (Kingston Maurward) while emergency services worked at the scene.

Traffic was being diverted through Dorchester town centre.

It was warned there was heavy traffic congestion in the area as motorists sought alternative routes.

Highways England, which looks after the A35, described the incident as a "multi-vehicle collision".

It said all emergency services were on scene and expected the road to be closed throughout the evening.

A spokesman added last night: "If travelling in the area please take care and allow additional time for your journey."

A Dorset Police spokesman said today: "We were called at 5.40pm on Monday to reports of a two vehicle road traffic collision on the A35 between the Stinsford roundabout and the Stadium roundabout.

"It involved a blue Volkswagen Caravelle registered to man from Dorchester and a grey Sym motorcycle registered to man from Weymouth.

"The road was closed in both directions.

"The motorcyclist sustained a broken leg and was taken to hospital for treatment.

"The road reopened at around 8pm."
