British Transport Police have confirmed that a person hit by a train at Chetnole near Maiden Newton has died.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene on Wednesday.

A police spokesman said the death is not being treated as suspicious and they are now working to identify the person and inform the family.

Great Western Railways said the person was hit by the 3.08pm Weymouth to Bristol train at Chetnole.

A spokesman said that replacement buses were ordered.

They added due to a person being hit by a train between Weymouth and Yeovil Pen Mill the line was blocked and trains running to and from these stations would be cancelled or delayed by up to an hour.

Disruption continued until just after 6.30pm when normal service resumed.
