A pub in Weymouth raised nearly £3,000 for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

Wyke Smugglers was hard to miss in the lead-up to Remembrance Day having been decorated with poppies.

The pub’s owners wanted to raise more money than ever to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

Since 2016, Wyke Smugglers has been helping to distribute poppies locally and has raised a total of £7,191.60.

Next year, the pub’s owners say they want to reach the £10,000 mark.

Anna Jones, the pub’s landlady, said: “Thank you to everyone that has contributed to the Poppy Appeal. Each and every one of you should be extremely proud of yourselves. Over the last three years we have raised a phenomenal £7,191.60! We look forward to your support next year when we aim to reach the £10,000 total mark.”

This year the pub managed to raise £2,872.60 for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal through sponsorship and selling poppies.

Mrs Jones added that the pub hopes to raise more than £3,000 next year, and will likely be decorated with poppies again.

She added: “I hope we can do it again, as long as we continue to attract sponsorship.

“There’s been a lot more people coming in and buying poppies this year, and sponsoring them. This year everyone wanted to get behind it.”

Mick Cantrill, the poppy appeal organiser for Wyke Regis said: “There’s been an outstanding effort from Wyke Smugglers. If I was able to get them more poppies, I’m sure they would have sold even more then they already did.

“Anna and Rhos have done exceedingly well. I am very chuffed by what they’ve managed to achieve. They have covered the pub with poppies and have been very proactive in how they’re marking the 100-year anniversary. They’ve gone above and beyond this year.”

He said he thought the pub has been a perfect example of how to get involved with the Royal Britihs Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

He added that he’s noticed a lot more people getting involved with the appeal in the area and said: “There’s been a lot of people trying their hardest to mark the 100 year celebrations.”

The large poppies covering the outside of the pub were put up by local firm TS Scaffolding with the help of The Veterans Hub. People will be able to enjoy the impressive display for a few more days until they’re taken down later this week.
