Remembrance memorials illuminated Dorset over the weekend as beacons were lit in a fitting final tribute to the centenary of Armistice Day
Over 1,000 beacons were lit across Britain on Sunday as part of the nationwide ‘Battles Over’ commemorative event.
On Portland, several hundred people gathered at 'Beacon Hill' opposite the Memory Stones for the lighting of the beacon there.
Councillor Ray Nowak said: “Following this there was a reading of the names of those from Portland that had died in World War One by members of the Portland Sea Cadets.
“There was music at The Drill Hall and an emotional and fitting dance performance by the local Stromatic Dance group."
To cap off the tribute, everybody stood to sing God Save the Queen as flower petals fell to the floor around them.
In Weymouth a beacon lighting ceremony was held at the Nothe Fort, while Dorchester held their own tribute by lighting a beacon at Salisbury Fields.
Similar events took place at over 1,000 locations across the country on Sunday, paying tribute to the millions killed or wounded in battle and those on the home front who struggled amidst pain and loss to help ensure freedom survived.
The event was a poignant and fitting finale to the countless tributes that have taken place recently to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.
