Criminals are pretending to be from a police cyber crime unit.
Dorset Police are warning residents of a scam where the caller is pretending to be from South West Regional Cyber Crime Unit (SWRCCU).
The automated call announces itself as being from the SWRCCU, and states your internet will be cut off, prompting you to press 1 to speak to someone about this.
A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “It’s a scam! Firstly, the SWRCCU do not operate an automated calling service of any variety. Secondly, neither the SWRCCU, Dorset Police, or anyone in the #CyberProtect network will ever cold-call you with a message like this.
“We will ALWAYS provide you with a way to verify who you are speaking to. Please pass this on, particularly to friends and family who may be vulnerable to this kind of fraud, both on Facebook and in the real world!”
