It's Children in Need weekend and across Dorset people have been getting involved in different schemes to raise money for the charity.

Weymouth Rowing Club members will be flying Children in Need flags as they row up the harbour today, and rowers will be collecting money from the public at the quayside.

Jane Wood, a member of the club, said: “Last year we did it for the first time because I was thinking about how lucky we are to be able to go out in the boats and row most days when some kids don’t have a hope in hell of doing such a thing.

“We raised £317 in a couple of hours. The people of Weymouth are just very generous and supportive and I hope this year that we will make even more for charity.”

Members of the club will be down at the harbour with collection buckets between 8am and 2pm today.

Schools and nurseries have been keen to get involved this year as well.

Prince of Wales School in Dorchester is aiming to raise £300 for Children in Need.

Headteacher Gary Spracklen said: “We have been running a series of events at the school for children in need, including the Great Prince of Wales Bake Off where children and their families have competed to see who make the spottiest cake.

“I think it’s really important that we teach children in schools about people less fortunate than them and the importance of giving all year round.”

Fiona Chatterton, manager of Rodwell preschool, said: “All of the children have come in in their pyjamas and we have raised about £40, now we are going to bake some ginger biscuits of Pudsey Bear.”

Holy Trinity Primary School in Weymouth made nearly £2,000 for charity by taking part in a sponsored bouncy castle obstacle course and selling Pudsey Bear biscuits.

Dorset County Council also raised some funds, as they made over £1,100 for Children in Need.

Drivers for Boots Pharmacy in Weymouth and Portland have been delivering medications to people at home, dressed-up in Pudsey Bear onesies. They were also collecting for charity in the town yesterday.

The entertainment telethon, the highlight of the Children in Need fundraising campaign, was broadcast last night on BBC One.
