A church in Dorchester will be marking the start of the festive season with a number of exciting events.

Carols on the Green will take place at St George’s Church, Fordington on Friday, November 30.

Traditional carols will be sung in front of the church in celebration of the start of advent.

There will be soup and rolls available throughout the event, with mulled punch and mince pies in the church afterwards.

Visitors are encouraged to wrap up warm, dust off their torches and wander over for some festive fun.

The event will begin at 6pm.

Carols on the Green will be followed by the launch of the church’s Christmas Tree Festival at 7pm.

The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Magic of the Musicals.’

In the lead-up to the festive event, organisers are appealing for Christmas Trees.

Yvonne Lee of the event’s committee said: “Some of the artificial Christmas trees we use for the festival have seen better days. If you have a tree between 3-5ft that you no longer want and are willing to donate. Please contact the church office. Alternatively, if you are willing to make a financial donation to help us buy some new trees, we would be very grateful.”

Trees are free to decorate but must be booked in advance. Programs, tea and cake will be sold throughout the festival to raise money for the church.

The Christmas Tree Festival will run until Monday, December 3.

This year, St George’s Church will once again be delivering a Christmas card to as many homes in the area as possible.

Last year the church managed to deliver around 500 letters.

Lucy Connelly of St George’s Church said: “I would be really grateful if anyone can help us out by putting cards through letterboxes in a street or two! It can be done any time between November 30 and December 22 (although the earlier we can get it done, the better).

“For some people who don’t get many cards it’s nice to have something form the church and we try to include all the details of our events on those.”
