A woman took to the skies in a daring fundraiser - despite being visually impaired.

Katherine, who lives in Weymouth, jumped out of a plane to raise funds for the Dorset Blind Association.

The organisation believes that sight should not mean missing out and actively encourages its members to take part in social clubs and activities.

Katherine was joined by another local supporter of Dorset Blind, Heather, and between them they raised just over £1,300, making a fantastic difference to the lives of partially sighted people in the community.

Both women wanted to be known only by their first names.

The Charity Tandem Skydive took place over at Old Sarum, Salisbury, with the Go Skydive team. The minimum fundraising target for participants wishing to do a skydive for Dorset Blind Association is £350 with a £50 registration fee.

Dorset Blind Association celebrates its centenary this year and has been supporting blind and partially sighted people within Dorset for 100 years to live full, happy lives. The charity now helps over 1000 people a month, and has over 400 volunteers to bring support and friendship to partially sighted people. The charity receives no statutory funding, but relies solely on donations and the support of local people.

Some of the services they offer in Dorset include social clubs, help at hospitals, providing equipment, an audio book library, and support for families and carers of people who are visually impaired.

The charity is encouraging other people to fundraise for them in 2019.

A spokesman said: “Do you fancy ticking a skydive off your bucket list, or to challenge yourself this new year? Why not take on a skydive and fundraise for Dorset Blind Association where the sky is the limit!

“Minimum fundraising target is £350, but do not be afraid to go beyond this target just as Heather and Katherine did!

“Two more daredevil supporters, Hannah and Frankie are taking the plunge before Christmas and have already raised a phenomenal £740.”
