Weymouth will soon be filled with festive cheer as another Christmas event is lined up to raise money for a Dorset cancer charity.

Pilgrim House Trust charity has teamed up with South Harbourside Community Group and Weymouth BID to launch the inaugural Christmas in the Square in aid of Weldmar Hospicecare.

The two-day event in Hope Square on December 8 and 9 will feature food and craft stalls from local traders alongside an exciting musical line up.

It is centred around the annual Light up a Life service held by Weldmar, where family and friends can make a donation and dedicate a light on the Christmas tree in memory of a loved one.

Activities will run from 12pm until around 6pm on both days, with the Dorset Wrecks kicking off the event on Saturday and Darron Garnett opening on Sunday.

Father Christmas will make guest appearances over the weekend with goodies for youngsters, and Pilgrim House will be open for children to enjoy free craft fun. Indoor stalls and a bar will also be available at the hall.

Dennis Corbett of the Pilgrim House Trust said: "The Rotary Club who use Pilgrim House run the Fayre in the Square in the summer, and we thought it would be nice if we did something around the square in winter and encourage traders to get involved in different ways.

"Weldmar liked the idea very much. We're trying to get everyone together and just have a really nice couple of days."

The main event will take place on the Sunday afternoon. It starts with a performance from Darron from 3pm to 4pm, after which a brass band will play until 4.30pm when the Light up a Life service will take place.

People are invited to dedicate a light on the Christmas tree in memory of loved ones, friends or colleagues regardless of whether the loss is recent, some time ago, or if the person being remembered was cared for by Weldmar staff. A book of remembrance will also be available in the Square.
