A special Weymouth and Portland Borough Council planning meeting is being held tomorrow to consider the controversial Weymouth Peninsula development.

A multi-million pound plan to transform one of the town's most prominent landmarks has been met with plenty of opposition, with some saying is likely to undermine town centre restaurants and hotels.

The public meeting is due to start at around 9.55am tomorrow at the Ocean Room in the Pavilion, and a large turnout is expected due to the high levels of public interest. Currently, the online planning application has received more than 120 public comments, many of which are objections to the scheme.

A site visit will take place at 9am after which councillors will go to the Ocean Room to begin the meeting.

The application is to consider the demolition of existing buildings, excluding the Pavilion theatre and Jurassic Skyline viewing tower, and redevelopment of the site with a mix of leisure and commercial uses including hotels, a mixed use pub/diner with guest accommodation, restaurants and cafes among other amenities.

It is for an outline scheme – with the details of access and all other matters reserved for consideration once the exact details are known.

If approved, more than £11 million will have to be borrowed to get the scheme underway, together with another £3 million taken from council reserves.

Councillors will go on a walk about around the site prior to the meeting, and up to 30 minutes will be allocated to members of the public to speak at the start of the meeting - each limited to three minutes.
