Brexit could prevent these canine superstars from competing in the Agility World Championships next year.

Dawn Weaver, from Portland, is the manager of Agility Team GB and is due to compete at the 2019 Agility World Championships in the Netherlands.

Her dog, Vegas, is a Border Collie cross Papillon and is an integral part of Britain’s dog agility team, winning four medals at previous events.

Now the possibility of a no deal Brexit means he may not be allowed to travel to the tournament.

Ms Weaver said: “They don’t know if a deal will be done so they keep saying you may need to do it now, but you might not.

“It’s causing a lot of stress from a team point of view because we don’t know how many dogs we are going to be able to take on the trip.

“It’s absolutely ridiculous, this shouldn’t even be on the Brexit table.”

At the moment, under the EU Pet Travel Scheme, owners of dogs, cats and ferrets can travel with their animals to and from EU countries provided they hold a valid EU pet passport.

Before a pet can travel from the UK to an EU country for the first time, it must be taken to a vet at least 21 days before travel.

The vet will ensure the animal has a microchip and rabies vaccination, before issuing an EU pet passport, which remains valid for travel for the pet’s lifetime.

However, if a Brexit deal is not achieved, this could all change and owners may need to start this process four months in advance of travel.

Dave Cumber, owner of Dave Cumber Vets in Weymouth and Dorchester, said: “Owners with pet passports may not be able to use them to travel to and from Europe next year if there is no deal.

“It is relevant now because any dog or cat travelling to mainland Europe after March 29th 2019 may need to have a rabies vaccine now, followed by a blood test at least 30 days later. After a period of three months the animal should be able to travel.

“We don’t want to be seen to be scaremongering, but we need to get the word out. If anybody is planning on travelling next year, they need to ring their vet and start thinking about it now.”
