A Weymouth park is in the running to receive up to £4000 towards the creation of a new sensory garden.

Radipole Park and Gardens has been shortlisted for the Tesco Bags of Help fund, and shoppers are now being urged to head along to their nearest stores to vote.

The superstore has teamed up with Groundwork charity, which works to help communities across the UK be more green, to launch the funding scheme.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive a cash grant of £4000, £2000 and £1000 raised from carrier bag sales in stores.

Voting is now open in Tesco stores across Weymouth and Portland, and will run throughout December. Customers can cast their vote using a token given to them at the checkout in store each time they shop.

The new sensory garden will be built at the start of the Willow grove near the Radipole Gardens entrance and would be fully accessible for wheelchair users.

Mike Goulden, chairman of the Friends of Radipole Park and Gardens, which applied for the fund, says: "The aim of the sensory garden project is to create a safe, peaceful place for people to relax using plant and garden features to appeal to senses.

"This environment can be particularly beneficial for those with disabilities, poor eyesight and suffering from Alzheimer’s."

Money raised from the community grant scheme has helped to fund thousands of community projects across the UK. Grants are awarded to voluntary or organisations such as schools, health bodies, community groups and councils.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s spokesman for community facilities, Cllr Kate Wheller, said: "This sounds like a fantastic project that will appeal to a range of age groups and benefit those with disabilities. I think it will be a great asset to the park."
