Disruption is expected on the Weymouth to Waterloo line this morning due to a circuit failure at Woking.

A track circuit problem at Woking meant trains were unable to run through the station and services had to be cancelled, delayed or diverted.

Network Rail fixed the fault and all lines were reopened before 9am however disruption is expected until 3pm.

South Western Railway issued a statement on their website which said: "All lines have now reopened however trains and crew have been displaced by this incident so residual cancellations, delays or revisions to services will occur.

"We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey."

Due to the disruptions stations are predicted to be busier than usual and South Western Railway are advising travellers to delay journeys or use alternative stations or routes.

Tickets are being accepted, at no extra cost, on the following services:

  • Basingstoke to Reading on Great Western Railway Services and Cross Country Services
  • Reading to London Paddington on Great Western Railway Services
  • London Underground between London Paddington and London Waterloo by any reasonable route

For further information or travel advice, people are advised to please speak to a member of staff or use a station help point.

A track circuit is part of the signalling system which shows the location of trains on the network.

This allows the system to know whether a section of track is occupied by a train or whether it is clear.

When there is a failure trains will stop before the affected signal and will have to be verbally directed through the affected area by the signaller at a reduced speed adding 10 minutes per signal to the journey time.
