Let's return to the streets of Portland and the island's shops and events in this trip down memory lane.

We ran the first part of this series last week.

But first we have a picture containing a lot of faces, some of which you might recognise. Back in 1996, Portland Mayor George Nash held his Mayoral Ball at the Pulpit Inn on Portland.

Guests of honour included MP Ian Bruce and his wife Hazel; Captain of HMS Osprey John Harvey and his wife Lesley; Portland Plant directors R.J. Langham and R. Best; Mayors from Bridport, Wimborne and Yeovil; Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Weymouth; Portland Mayor designate Val Durston and Hugh Chalker, president of Weymouth and Portland Chamber of Trade. The 140 guests raised £1,500 towards the Mayor's fund.

Moving on, some of these shops might bring back memories. You can see W. Saint (Chemists) in Fortuneswell, next to Tuck & Discount Tackle, pictured in 1980.

Sadly the Grove Post Office and Grove Stores, pictured here in 1994 is no more. And we've got a lovely picture of the inside of the shop and post office, taken in 1996 and showing the owner's daughter Charlotte Dean The shop and post office was victim of dwindling demand and competition from shops and the Post Office at nearby Easton. But we can see a still thriving post office Weston Post Office, pictured in 1996 and bring you a view of Weston.

We also bring you a picture of the much-missed Lloyds Bank at Easton, taken in 1990. It closed in the summer of 2017, as the only bank left on the island. Thanks as always to Geoff Kirby and his ever-helpful website geoffkirby.co.uk, which superbly documents old and new Portland.
