These daredevils have raised more than £1,200 for MacMillan Cancer Support from a sponsored abseil and fundraising event.

All 10 of them bravely abseiled from the 60-foot high Neddyfield Cliffs near the Cheyne Weares car park on Southwell Road, Portland.

None of them had ever abseiled outside of school trips before, but that did not stop them from taking on the challenge during extremely windy conditions.

Tony Menday organised the event after his mother Marilyn and auntie Dawn were both diagnosed with cancer.

His mother has now been given the all clear and his auntie is undergoing treatment.

He said: “The event is so close to our family. Over the last few months Macmillan have been a big support for my family and friends.

“On the day I was the first person to go down. My niece and nephew went down and some of them kept going down the cliff over and over again. It went really well, everybody managed to do it and we raised a lot of money.”

After the abseiling, the thrill seekers went to the Pulpit Inn, where a fundraising event was held between 12.30pm and 6pm.

There was a selection of stalls selling different items and a raffle raising money for the charity. There was also games and activities for the children like face painting and live music for the adults.

Mr Menday said: “The raffle went really well, we sold loads of tickets as we had over 50 prizes donated to us by different companies, including a two-night stay in a bed and breakfast, which was the top prize supplied by the Pulpit Inn.

“I want to say thank you to the Wyke Smugglers pub for sponsoring the event. So far we have raised £1,224 for Macmillan.”

In addition to the money raised for Macmillan Cancer Support, they also raised £102 for Oakhaven Hospice, where one of Mr Menday’s family was cared for before they recently passed away.

Macmillan Cancer Support is a registered charity that provides support, advice and tools to help people andtheir families deal with a cancer diagnosis.
