A black comedy shot on Portland with a star-studded cast can be seen on our television screens this festive season.

'Happy New Year, Colin Burstead', which was filmed at the island's Pennsylvania Castle Estate, has been added to the Christmas and New Year TV listings.

As reported in the Echo, the film, directed by Ben Wheatley, premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in October.

Starring Charles Dance, Neil Maskell, Joe Cole, Sam Riley and Hayley Squires among others, the film tells the story of its lead character who hires a lavish castle for his family to celebrate New Year.

The backdrop is the castle and the estate grounds, as well as surrounding locations on Portland, bringing the spotlight to Dorset's coast once again.

The actors and crew spent time on location on Portland and stayed on the estate while filming.

A spokesman for Pennsylvania Castle Estate said: "We are delighted to announce that the eagerly anticipated Ben Wheatley drama – Happy New Year Colin Burstead is set to air on BBC2, on Sunday, December 30 at 10.30pm.

"Happy New Year Colin Burstead tells the story of its lead character who hires a lavish castle for his extended family to celebrate New Year. The backdrop for this black comedy is Penn Castle and the Estate grounds, as well as surrounding locations on Portland, bringing the spotlight to the most southerly point of the Jurassic Coast.

"The entire cast and crew took over Pennsylvania Castle Estate for the two week film schedule, where the team also managed accommodation and catering. Top names such as Neil Maskell, Charles Dance, Richard Glover, Joe Cole and Sam Riley spent time on location on Portland, whilst staying on the Estate for the duration of filming.

"We’re looking forward to watching the drama unfold, and of course keeping a look out for local locations."

It's not the first time that there's been a spotlight on Dorset as a location for filming.

Film crews descended on Weymouth seafront last year to shoot 'Two for Joy', a British feature film starring Billie Piper, which came out in cinemas this autumn.

In 2016, director Christopher Nolan was joined by Harry Styles, Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy in Weymouth to film scenes for the wartime blockbuster Dunkirk.

Other films shot here in recent years include family film Who Killed Nelson Nutmeg? filmed at Freshwater Beach Holiday Park at Burton Bradstock in 2014, a version of Thomas Hardye's Far From The Madding Crowd filmed at Beaminster and Sherborne in 2013 and Richard Curtis' film The Boat That Rocked shot in Portland Harbour in 2008. On TV, West Bay was transformed into coastal community Broadchurch for the hit ITV drama.
