There's more exciting news for youngsters as a range of new play equipment is set to be installed at parks across Weymouth.

Around £80,000 will be spent installing new play sets at three different sites.

Elm Close play area in Preston will be the first to receive around £20,000 worth of new equipment consisting of a roundabout, train and spring see saw. The play area will be closed until Monday, January 21 for works.

The bulk of the £80k budget will spent on Southill play area, which will receive an entirely new play set including a swing, roundabout, four seat spring see saw, metal pod swing, multi-play unit, springers, and a new drainage system. The project is set to cost around £52,000.

Southill play area is currently closed while the play equipment is installed, but is set to reopen on Monday, February 4.

Pottery Lane play area in Westham will receive some updated play equipment, including a multi-play unit and a spring see saw, costing approximately £7,500. Work will start on Wednesday, January 23 with the aim to be completed by Monday, February 4.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council said the completion dates of the play areas are weather dependent.

Cllr Kate Wheller, borough council spokesman for community facilities, said: "This is very exciting news, what a great way to start the new year.

"Play areas are so important to encourage active lifestyles and local children will benefit immensely from these improvements."

In December 2018, the long-awaited play area at The Marsh in Weymouth finally opened after a number of set backs.

It is part of the £185,000 Marsh Masterplan, which also includes brand new seating, the removal of the derelict running track, installation of a drop kerb, a basketball area and fencing in the area.

The Friends of the Marsh worked with Weymouth and Portland Borough Council on the plans for the play area, with input from the local community.
