Police have launched an investigation after a man suffered head injuries in an early hours 'assault' at a Portland hotel.

Officers were called to reports of an altercation between two men at the Maritime Hotel in Southwell just after 5.40am on New Year's Day.

A man, aged in his 20s, suffered a head injury and was taken to Dorset County Hospital in an ambulance.

The hotel says the incident is not connected to the business and the people involved people were not guests.

The incident appeared to have been documented in a TripAdvisor review for the hotel which has now been removed.

One user of the travel review site, who stayed at the hotel overnight on December 31, claimed that they were woken up at 5am to girls screaming and shouting to 'get the police'.

They alleged that their parents had their door kicked and shoved, and that they saw police forensics at the hotel when they went down for breakfast the next morning.

The review has since been deleted by TripAdvisor as some of the content in the review breached the website's guidelines.

A TripAdvisor spokesman said: "Our guidelines require that reviews submitted should be directly related to a first-hand experience, so should not include second hand information such as opinions or information from other sources.

"We have investigated the review in question and determined that it was in breach of our guidelines and as such it was removed."

The spokesman added that information about a police incident does meet guidelines and the user can resubmit their review without second hand information if they wish.

Another reviewer, who did not give the date of their stay, claimed there were "mass brawls in the corridors" which led to them calling the police. It is not clear whether this is linked to the incident on January 1.

Other reviewers have spoken of their positive experience staying at the hotel.

Speaking about the incident on January 1, a spokesman for Dorset Police said: "A 29-year-old man from Weymouth was arrested on suspicion of assault and has been released under investigation.

"A full investigation into the circumstances remains ongoing."

The spokesman did not say whether forensic teams had been sent to the hotel.

A member of the Maritime Hotel management team, who refused to give his name, said the incident was 'nothing to do with the hotel'.

He said: "Some outsiders came into the hotel that weren't staying there. It's not the hotel's fault."
