Dog Friendly Weymouth is asking for beach access to be clarified for the coming year.

The organisation, which claims 1,000 members, says one of its priorities for the year ahead is to clearly establish where and when dog owners can exercise their pets locally.

Linda Stevenson, who founded the group, spoke at the Weymouth and Portland Borough Council meeting to explain the group’s aims.

She also made a plea for better beach access: “The bit we have got at Preston is very small and almost inaccessible to those with disabilities, can we have this sorted out as soon as possible please?” she said.

It had been decided that rules which govern the exercising of dogs in Weymouth will continue in place for an extra year or more.

The public spaces protection order was due for a review and a public consultation during the winter but has been delayed.

The council has instead decided to extend the existing order to include the spring and summer and then carry out the consultation next September, which would also be able to include the new Weymouth Town Council.

If that happened new orders could be ready for Easter 2020.
