Weymouth and Portland police have released some "positive" statistics to show how the work they have done in the recent years has impacted crime in the area.

They tweeted: "Weymouth and Portland is a great safe place to live, work or visit. We are determined to ensure it remains that way. Here are some positive results demonstrating our commitment to keeping you and your loved ones safe."

The statistics are based on figures from April 1, 2018-January 18, 2019 compared to the period April 1, 2017-January 1, 2018.

Here are the statistics they offered:

  • 6.1 per cent decrease in dwelling burglaries over the last three months.
  • In December 2018, there were only three properties broken into across the whole of Weymouth and Portland!
  • 15.4 per cent decrease in anti-social behaviour.
  • 8.8 per cent decrease in criminal damage.
  • In November 2018, we caught a male within hours of committing a burglary whilst he was still in possession of the goods!
  • 23.7 per cent decrease in commercial burglaries over the last three months.
  • 5.8 per cent decrease in theft of bicycles.
  • 50 per cent decrease in vehicle crime.
  • Between April 1 and December 31, there were only 67 cars broken into. That's only one car broken into every four days across the whole of Weymouth and Portland!
  • There has been a massive decrease in thefts from within vehicles of 61 per cent.
  • 28 per cent decrease in thefts of vehicles. Following a short spate of theft of mopeds, a male was arrested in December and Police have received no further reports.
