Dedicated employees battled the winter coastal weather to collect a total of 30 bags of rubbish during a litter pick on Chesil Beach.

The event saw 16 workers from Landmarc brave unfavourable weather conditions to clear the debris that had accumulated around the beach and its boundaries.

Landmarc looks after the Wyke Regis Training Centre just north of Chesil Beach and it was decided that employees should get involved in clearing up the beach.

Their base is within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), meaning beach cleans such as this are incredibly important in the protection and conservation of the rare species that the area is home to.

With 30 rubbish bags filled by the end of the day, the team cleared a huge number of discarded items from the area, which included plastic drinks bottles and lids, rope and fishing line.

Andrew Cheeseman, Landmarc’s Rural Manager at Wyke Regis Training Centre, who organised and took part in the litter pick, said: “Our main camp is located within a Site of Special Scientific Interest, so we are particularly keen to support this type of event in order to help keep the environment clear of debris and pollution to prevent it from entering the Fleet Lagoon, where it would cause more environmental damage.”

Landmarc’s Bridging Manager and volunteer litter picker, Carl Card, added: “Our team is committed to removing as much litter as possible from Chesil Beach, as any of these items could be easily mistaken as a food source by marine wildlife, resulting in fatal consequences.”

All of the rubbish removed was taken to the local recycling centre in Weymouth and separated or recycled accordingly.
