Plans are going on show for the next proposed phase of development at Chickerell – a huge scheme to include more than 500 homes and a school.

The vast development on the east side of Chickerell – understood to have a proposed access off the Chickerell link road at the bottom of the Granby Industrial Estate – is the next stage in the ever-growing community. Discussions to build there have been ongoing for years and the site is in the local plan for residential development.

Now developers Persimmon Homes are inviting people to view its plans for the land at an event tomorrow.

A spokesman for Persimmon Homes South Coast said: “We are holding a public exhibition in order to give people the opportunity to view proposals for the development of land east of Chickerell. We are currently seeking the opinions of interested parties on the proposals to provide around 520 new homes, a primary school, public open space and sports facility for the area.”

The Echo reported on the proposals in the summer, stating that the developer has submitted a request to West Dorset District Council with a view to submitting a planning application.

At the time, Cllr Ian Gardner, portfolio holder for planning at the district council said: “The development was an allocated site in the local plan which is due to be brought forward for development.”

He said the council has to provide a certain number of homes as set out by central government which would be addressed through allocated sites.

The proposal comes as the council, together with North Dorset District Council and Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, encourage more development under its Opening Doors campaign. Their target is to see developers build 20,000 more good quality homes of all tenures across the council areas by 2033.

* The public exhibition will be held Willowbed Hall, Putton Lane, Chickerell, on Friday, January 25 between 2pm and 8pm.

Persimmon says residents unable to attend the exhibition who would like to give theri views can email soco.land@persimmonhomes.com or by sending any written comments to Persimmon Homes, 100 Wickham Road, Fareham, PO16 7HT.
