A dog was was rescued by a lifeboat crew after falling off the cliffs near Old Harry Rocks yesterday.

The dog, which was miraculously unhurt in the fall, was seen by the owners to be swimming in the shallow water just south of the headland.

Swanage Lifeboat Station was called just before midday.

A spokesman for the station said: "As the crew made ready to launch, a Shannon class lifeboat on training duty rounded Old Harry and reported that they could see both the owners, on the top of the cliffs, and the dog.

"They were unable to help directly but were able to indicate to the inshore lifeboat as it closed upon the scene exactly where the dog was."

The crew managed to recover the dog at around 12.45pm and arranged to meet the coastguard at South Beach in Studland where the dog was reunited with its owners.
