A SEAFRONT amusement arcade at Weymouth could be demolished and replaced with 26 flats.

Weymouth and Portland planning committee is being asked to approve the application for Harrys Amusements on the Esplanade when it meets next week.

The existing building is mainly two storey with a three storey section close to Gloucester Mews. If approved it will be replaced with a four and a half storey building with seventeen one-bed flats and nine two-bed, with a central section one storey lower.

None of the statutory bodies have objected to the scheme although the Environment Agency has lodged a holding objection until it sees amended plans which design out the risk of flooding to the lower ground floor of the proposed building.

Housing officers say the scheme will help meet local need for smaller homes with the borough currently having 1,600 households on the register in need of affordable housing.

The planning committee, which meets on February 6th, is being recommended to approve the application, submitted by Brownsea Build, delegating the details to the head of planning subject to a satisfactory agreement over the Environment Agency concerns over flood risk.
