A spokesman for Thorntons said the decision to close the Dorchester shop was made after undertaking a review.

He said: “Like any retailer, we are continuously reviewing our store estate to ensure we are in the locations that meet our customer needs.

“As a result of such a review, the decision was taken to close the store at Dorchester on Saturday, March 9.

“Currently, four staff members are employed at the store and we are looking to find them other employment opportunities where possible.

“Thorntons has been delighted to serve our many local customers over the years and we would encourage them to shop for their favourite Thorntons products online at www.thorntons.co.uk in the future.”

Neil Strudwick, Chairman of Dorchester BID, said it’s sad that another big name is leaving the high street, but a lot of chain stores are making the decision to operate online.

He added: “I do hope that staff are kept on in some way. They know the business inside out and it would be a shame if they are made redundant.”

He is also confident the shop in South Street will be replaced, with the high street remaining a key meeting place for residents and visitors alike.

Last week, the Echo reported how the H.Samuel store in Dorchester is set to close on Saturday, March 16.
