CLLR David Harris (Echo, February 6) is quite right the borough of Weymouth and Portland is being stripped of its assets.

And with the collusion of some borough councillors, who should be standing up for both towns.

However, he is wrong if he suggests "under the shake-up it ( the new council) will have no responsibility."

In my opinion it will have responsibility for a lot of the things that our residents hold most dear.

Our parks and gardens, open spaces and children playgrounds.

Our beautiful beach and our prom and the events it holds on them.

It will have responsibility for public conveniences and our cemeteries and the memorials of our loved ones, and much more.

This is why, whilst we understand the huge strain that the costs of adult and children's social care will put upon the Dorset Council budget we must fight to retain some source of income within the town.

It is vital that all W&PB councillors attend the budget setting meeting on February 20 and stand up for our borough.

And it is why come May 2nd local residents must choose wisely when they place their cross on the ballot paper.

The town deserves councillors in both places who will work tirelessly and fight for the good of both Weymouth, Melcombe Regis and Portland.
