A MAN who was believed to have been risking his life by entering the water, turned out to be a metal detectorist in a dry suit searching for treasure.

Dorset Police were called just after 1pm yesterday (8/2) to reports of concern for welfare after a man was seen in the water near the Esplanade in Weymouth.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “Officers attended but the man was found to be a metal detectorist. He came out of the water on his own accords and words of advice were given.”

Wyke Coastguard Rescue Team were also called to the scene, and said the person was believed to be entering the water opposite the Fairhaven Hotel.

A spokesman for the coastguard said: “We arrived on scene with Dorset Police and a paramedic to find a local metal detectorist going about his business in a dry suit.

“The first informant did the right thing by dialling 999 and asking for the coastguard. A false alarm with good intent. The conditions can only be described as miserable with heavy rain and gales. We were pleased to return to the station dry.”
