On Monday, we reported on fresh calls being made to bring Weymouth's defunct harbour tramway back into use. This is an issue that our readers had a lot of opinions on. Here's what they had to say.

  • Would love to see it rumble along the quayside again. But to go where? The old post office train had a purpose where any more do not. I doubt the harbour will be able to take the weight of a train as we all know it will take millions to strengthen the whole road. So not negative comments but more piratical ones! Red Reble
  • Depends on how you view the climate change issues. If you have to raise the harbour walls which would bury the old line and then provide for light rail which would help fund the whole scheme as a tourist attraction. Perhaps then as part of a larger business plan a spur down the Rodwell trail? Improving access to West Dorset via light rail is also a way forward. I’m sure Maiden Newton would like to see their Bridport connection back. Andy Matthews
  • The train is almost empty by the time it reaches Weymouth, how many would stay on board to the Pavilion? It would make more sense to terminate trains at Bournemouth or Poole and create a light railway or tram service with frequent services. Tobermory
  • Get a tram running to Portland down the Rodwell Trail is what’s needed more than down the quayside. MASK & SNORKEL
  • I would love to see it back. But what is the point of it except to hold up traffic again? There are far more pressing needs for money to be spent on transport links which would be of far more use to more people. tufty
  • Yes it would be nice to see the trains running again but it would also be nice to see Boeing 747s land on the peninsula carpark. Having the line as a tramway for park and ride sounds pretty dumb to me. I can’t see how the costs can ever be justified and the chaos it would cause to commercial, residential and general traffic would be off the charts. Good luck getting into your garage on Commercial Road. Have fun getting a big crane or trailer down there to get boats in and out of the harbour. OpenWaterSwim
