AN OPEN day at a historic Weymouth attraction aims to encourage more volunteers to help promote local history and heritage.

The Nothe Fort is now a major tourist attraction, with its museum, education programme and public events.

But the fort wouldn’t be able to operate without the small army of volunteers who work in the background.

A volunteer recruitment day is being held at Nothe Fort on Saturday, March 9 from 11am to 4pm with free entry for all.

This year it is a joint open day with the newly-formed Weymouth & Portland Heritage Group, a new community action group dedicated to promoting our rich local heritage. Partners consist of Weymouth Museum, Portland Museum, D-Day Museum, The Churches Conservation Trust (including St George’s Church on Portland) Sandsfoot Castle and Friends of the Rodwell Trail. This gives potential volunteers a wide choice of options to become involved by playing a role in managing, protecting our local historic attractions. So there will be many different opportunities and roles of offer.

Roles at the fort include reception, gift shop, events stewards, electricians, plumbers, ICT, carpenters, graphic designers, model makers, evacuee experience, collection assistants, interpretation researchers and computer aided design, technicians and Nothe Fort Artillery volunteers. You can devote as much time as you want depending on personal circumstances. No qualifications are required except for the ability to communicate with visitors, show enthusiasm, be helpful and have a good sense of humour at all times.

A spokesman said: “Nothe Fort is a great place to spend time to stimulate your mind and socialise with people from a diverse range of backgrounds. The Fort has a wide range of personalities from all walks of life who are very hands on, responsive and friendly. It is a very diverse and interesting place to work and many of our volunteers find working here very rewarding with the satisfaction of helping to preserve and promote this historic visitor attraction.”
