Residents will be enjoying a flipping good Shrove Tuesday as two pan-tastic events are set to get underway.

Portlanders will be once again grabbing their frying pans for the annual pancake races at Easton.

In recognition of Shrove Tuesday, adults, children and clergy will be taking to the vicarage lawn at All Saints Church on March 5, to race to the finish line with pan and pancake in hand.

There will be races for all ages with the first event beginning at 10.30am and all races will be started by town crier, Stuart Cave.

Participants need to bring their own pan and pancake.

Jan Camp, who organises the event said: "It's a community event and anything that brings the community together is a great thing. Portland is very much a community-minded place so these kind of events are always extremely well supported as this one will be I'm sure. It's a bit of good old basic fun and competition." The top three finishers in each race will win an Easter egg and prizes for the races are being provided by the Tesco and Co-op stores in Portland and the Dorset Echo.

Mayor of Portland, Charlie Flack will be on hand to give out the prizes.

Mrs Camp said if the weather is bad the event will take place inside All Saints Church, as it did in 2018, but with the recent sunshine she hoped for much better weather.

In Dorchester, residents will also be limbering to take part in races at the Borough Gardens.

The Dorchester races will kick off at 4pm on Shrove Tuesday (March 5) and will be held in aid of Marie Curie.

There will be various races for the children and grown-ups will have the chance to take on mayor of Dorchester, David Taylor, town crier Alastair Chisholm and some councillors in the adults race.

Cllr Taylor urged residents to join in the event and help show "just how good living in Dorchester is".

He said: "It will be a lovely event. I will be there with my pan in hand ready to take part. It's all for a good cause and for the community to share a day with us and celebrate this fabulous tradition."

Rob Scott of Brown Goose Catering will be providing the pancakes and prizes, so all participants have to do is bring a pan.

Former mayor, Cllr Tim Harries who will be supporting the event added: "Hopefully the sun will be out and people can have a run around and some fun. It's a great event and supports the great work Marie Curie do."
