OBJECTIONS have been raised to plans for an illuminated sign outside a DIY store as a town looks to reduce its carbon footprint.

Fowler Hire and Sales, based at St Andrews Trading Estate on Shoe Lane, Bridport, has applied for permission to replace its current signage with two illuminated signs.

Bridport Town Council’s planning committee discussed the plans on Monday, when councillors said the lighting was ‘unnecessary.’

Cllr Terry Harrison said: “It’s a needless waste of power. The illumination seems pointless.”

Cllr Dave Rickard added: “We are trying to reduce the carbon footprint of the town and I don’t see a reason for lighting signage.”

At the same meeting, councillors also discussed amended plans from discount bookshop The Works.

The company’s initial proposals for yellow signage at its new store on East Street were criticised by councillors as being ‘garish’ and not in keeping with the area.

But amended plans show a reversed company colour scheme - predominantly blue with minimal yellow - which council leader, Cllr Sarah Williams, describes as a ‘definite improvement.’

Councillors had no objections to The Works’ plans.
